Campaign Furniture has been around since the time of Julius Caesar. This type of furniture is designed to be folded up and packed away so it can be carried by travelling armies. It became very popular in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries following the rise of the British empire and the domination of the gentleman within the army.

British designers such as Chippendale, Sheraton and Heplewhite all competed to design chairs, tables, bookcases, desks, chests, beds and washstands.

British officers and civilian gentleman travelling to India, North America and the rest of the British Empire for months and sometimes years at a time could take a complete suite of furniture with them for their new life and enjoy the same standard of life as they did at home. Campaign or 'knock down furniture' as it was also called, gave time spent in canvas tents a degree of comfort.

There was a close relationship between campaign and household furniture with the only real difference being that the campaign furniture was designed to be folded up and packed away without the use of tools or nails, and then transported to another destination. Many London cabinet-makers catered especially for the needs of ships officers and ships passengers. Campaign furniture was ideal for ship travel as it could easily be stowed within the ship before being carried onto its final destination by slaves or animals.

Our range is made from beautiful polished teak and features dove-tailed joinery, leather inserts (desk and side table) and brass detailing on corners, feet and handles.

- Kilim Cushions -

Kilims are traditional, unique pieces typically hand-woven by women from the Balkans to Pakistan... Weaving is a tradition that is passed down through generations and the motifs tell stories. Traditionally used as decorative items or prayer rugs, they have gained popularity in Western households.

While some Kilims can be dated over 100 years old, they work well when styled with modern and industrial furniture, adding warmth, colour and texture to interiors. Once they become irreparable through age, they are often made into throw cushions.

If you love the aesthetics but not the price tag come in to the Mt Eden store to look at ours -
they have the texture, colour and warmth of authentic Kilim's but not the price tag!
